Regardless of the fact that doing a computer cleanup is worth doing, we have to think
about the downsides before doing anything. Remember that files could accidentally
be deleted, by the software we use or by mistake when doing this by hand. And cleaning
out unwanted files needs some time set aside, more so if it is done by hand but even
using software for the task can consume time. These are minor issues though and the
clear improvements gained balance any downsides.
You will need to pick one of two ways to do a hard drive clean; one option is to
go through all files and select the ones to remove, or software can be employed to
do the job. Cleaning manually involves stepping through all folders on the hard drive
and then making a decision about which parts of the drive are no longer required,
and removing them depending on what you want to keep and want to delete. Because
you examine each file manually the risks are less than running a cleanup program
but if there are many files and folders this can take time and energy. Automated
cleaning software products that make delete/dont delete decisions based on fields
like the date files were last accessed, and internally build a table of files and
folders for removal.
A growing number of cleaner tools can be found that handle drive cleanup techniques
by adopting different methods. One of these product is known simply as a basic hard drive cleaner, some
of these are commercial products and others are free. But this is not all these products are
capable of, many can also get rid of old data from free space, scan hard disks for
porn or adult files, discover and clean copyrighted material, and show where drive
space is being used.
